Pre-Interview Camera Test

6-Point Interview Setup Checklist

  1. Check your face is well-litFace a window or a ring light. Avoid overhead lighting that casts shadows under your eyes. Never sit with a window behind you — you'll appear as a silhouette. Test the camera above and adjust until your face is evenly lit.
  2. Frame yourself at eye levelThe camera should be at eye level, not below. Looking down at the camera is universally unflattering and sends 'disengaged' signals. Stack books under your laptop if needed. Include your head and upper shoulders in frame — leave some space above your head.
  3. Clean up the backgroundRemove clutter behind you. A plain wall, a bookshelf, or a plant works well. Avoid virtual backgrounds unless your internet is very stable — they flicker and distract. If you must blur, test in the actual meeting software first.
  4. Test your microphone separatelyVideo quality matters less than audio clarity. Use headphones with a mic if possible — it eliminates echo and improves voice quality. Test your mic on our microphone test page. Say a full sentence and make sure you can hear yourself clearly.
  5. Run a practice call with a friendDo a 5-minute test call in Zoom/Teams/Meet — whichever the interviewer chose — at least 24 hours before. Check camera, mic, screen share if needed, and that the meeting link works. This is the single most valuable step.
  6. Close distracting apps and notificationsQuit Slack, email, Messages, WhatsApp. Silence your phone. On Windows use Focus Assist; on Mac use Do Not Disturb. A notification popup during 'Tell me about yourself' is an instant credibility hit.
